In addition to the usual cancer screening services we also offer the following on request:
- Breast ultrasoundUltrasound examination of the breast using high frequency sound waves and involving no potentially harmful radiation. for accurate diagnosis in breast cancer screening
- Vaginal ultrasoundInternal ultrasound examination in which the lower abdomen is investigated with the aid of high frequency soundwaves. This allows a much better view of the uterus and ovaries than is possible via an external ultrasound scan, and involves no potentially harmful radiation. for detailed assessment of the entire lower abdomen
- Immunochemical faecal occult blood testA stool sample analysis designed to show the presence of traces of blood in the stool. This test reacts only to human blood, and is therefore more accurate than previous guaiac tests (Haemoccult test). for early detection of colon cancer
- NMP22 testBladder cancer represents about 3% of all malignant tumours. Early detection greatly improves the chances of successful treatment. The nuclear matrix protein NMP 22, which is produced by the cancer cells, can be detected in urine tests even before any other symptoms, such as blood in the urine, occur. The test has been shown to have a sensitivity of 80% in detecting the early stages of bladder cancer. for bladder cancer
- Thin Prep cervical smear test In contrast to the standard PAP smear test, the Thin Prep test provides a larger number of cervix cells and allows cleaner and more accurate processing and analysis, thereby enabling a more reliable diagnosis.
- Pap smear tests for diagnosis of genital HPV
infections HPV infections (human papilloma virus) are amongst
the most common sexually transmitted diseases. In most cases they
cause harmless skin reactions, such as genital warts. However, some
types of HPV have been classified as ‘high risk’, since they
have been associated with cervical cancer.
Infection with a high risk virus can be identified as part of the normal cancer screening. Thus close monitoring can be put in place or, in the case of a suspect cervical smear, clarification can be obtained in good time via a tissue sample. (HPV testing) - Bone density scans to assess the risk of osteoporosisLoss of bone mass in older women, making the bones increasingly brittle and thus leading to an increased risk of fractures. Osteoporosis is the main cause of hip fractures in women.
